From the Ground up | Adobe
Overview
The brief from Adobe was to Imagine a sustainable future for Aotearoa through the use of Adobe creative tools in an exhibition format to empower and inspire the next generation. As part of the requirements of the brief, we chose the Sustainable Development Goal of sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) as the core focus for our project. ‘From the Ground Up’ was designed through the use of a speculative lens to create a future-minded installation allowing young kiwis to have their say and take charge in how they viewed their ideal sustainable housing future.

Problem
Buying a home and living comfortably feels out of reach for many young adults in Aotearoa. In particular, young Aucklanders are currently facing housing stress, relocation, flatting issues, and exploitative rentals, all of which prioritise survival over wellbeing, leaving little room for them to imagine futures they can actually enjoy and feel comfortable in. This makes many unsure if their actions alone can even make a difference, especially when they don’t know where to start their sustainable journey.

Process
As this project outcome was an installation, it was crucial that user testing and prototyping was involved to ensure everything was produced as needed. This included tasks such as ensuring the questionnaire ran smoothly and fit the tablet available, making sure the card-stock was high quality and the printing had the correct sizes and readability, and visiting the location of the installation for viability.

Outcome
‘From the Ground up’ is a speculative installation that allows participants to complete a housing sustainability questionnaire to determine their dream future home. Once completed, their new personalised 3D modelled home based off their answers would be added to a live sustainable city to join the collection of other participants’ homes.

Posters with empowering copy were designed to emphasise the control participants were given through the installation. While home-focused sustainable tips were displayed to showcase the small actionable ways you can improve your home sustainably.

Graphics were created to provide visual examples to help participants when completing the questionnaire.

Take-away cards with different sustainable tips for their homes were available for participants to take with them as a reminder to action them when possible.

From the Ground up aims to reflect your needs and values through a speculative sustainable home designed just for you. The aim is to give the control and future vision back to the participants, allowing them the option to truly imagine a positive and healthy future, inspiring them to take action over what they can actually control right now.
